Fukushima, Japan

Hirotogawa is a sake brand from Matsuzaki Shuzo in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima, led by sixth-generation toji Hiroyuki Matsuzaki. After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the illness of the long-time toji, 26-year-old Matsuzaki took over brewing. Trained at the Fukushima Sake Academy, he honed both technical skills and the value of human connections, gaining strong support from staff and sake enthusiasts. In his first year, he won gold awards in Ginjo and Junmai at the Fukushima Prefecture New Sake Competition and Daiginjo at the National New Sake Competition. Since then, he has earned gold for ten consecutive years and placed second in the Junmai division of the 2016 SAKE COMPETITION. Guided by the philosophy “to delight those who support us with the sake we brew,” Matsuzaki continues to craft Hirotogawa, celebrated for its quality, passion, and community ties.
